Moving between the strictures of the legislation and the day-to-day interactions of particular communities—from prescription to practice—has revealed a shift in focus from the fixed language of status to the more mobile discourse of sorts: from national definitions to local and regional differences worked out face-to-face. It is in these direct interactions where dress “shows”—where it nuances the way individuals interact with one another’s clothed image. Clothing knowledge and purchases followed, and themselves shaped, complex social interactions that related ranks to one another as they distinguished between them. The range of interactions of those in the middle in particular was very broad indeed—they walked with Earls and administered charity to the poor. Dress was one of the key strategies at their disposal with which to articulate their perception of a social position that grew in prominence across a couple of generations, and the quality of the lace on their gloves perhaps played a more significant role in the making of the middle classes than historians have previously realized. Following these social relations has shown the complexities of the interrelations of dress as an expression of status and its role in articulating individual and familial identity.
